Why Are You Always on the Phone? SMART Skills with the Smartphone Generation is a revelation and an actual depiction of what goes on in the everyday lives of youth who are connected and are online most of the time either via their smartphone or their iPad. Many a time, parents of tweens and teenagers from the age of 10 onwards to 18, are curious and are even "tearing their hair out"; frustrated with their child/children's obsession with texting and chatting online 24/7. The challenge then is how we can seek to understand the complexities and nuances of our youth and their connection in the 21st-century technologically driven globalized society. Unraveling this challenge, this book provides powerful insights into the lives of individuals as they grapple with the rise of being connected at any time at any place via their smartphone. Voices from parents, tweens and teens sharing their online experiences and opinions have been weaved and compiled into the text for an honest and interesting read for all. With stories and anecdotes, Why Are You Always on the Phone? serves to answer the questions "Why are you always online?", "What are you doing online?" and a list of queries that most parents, educators and even tweens and teenagers themselves seek to know and are curious about. It is hoped that by answering these, it will prompt deeper, more empathetic, and layered connections between parents, tweens, teenagers and educators for more fulfilling parent-child and teacher-student relationships and thus highlight the importance of practising effective and safe uses of the smartphone and other devices.

What Makes this Book Unique? No crystal ball is required to safely predict, that in the future – even more than in the past – mastered innovativeness will be a primary criterion distinguishing s- cessful from unsuccessful companies. At the latest since Michael Porter’s study on the competitiveness of nations, the same criterion holds even for the evaluation of entire countries and national economies. Despite the innumerable number of p- lications and recommendations on innovation, competitive innovativeness is still a rare competency. The latest publication of UNICE – the European Industry - ganization representing 20 million large, midsize and small companies – speaks a clear language: Europe qualifies to roughly 60% (70%) of the innovation strength of the US (Japan). The record unemployment in many EU countries does not c- tradict this message. A main reason may be given by the fact that becoming an innovative organi- tion means increased openness towards the new and more tolerance towards risks and failures, both challenging the inherently difficult management art of cultural change. Further, lacking innovativeness is often related to legal and fiscal barriers which rather hinder than foster innovative activities. Yet another reason to explain Europe’s notorious innovation gap refers to insufficient financial R&D resources on the company as well as on the national level. As a result, for example, hi- ranking decisions on the level of the European Commission are taken to increase R&D expenditures in the European Union from roughly 2% to 3% of GNP.

Digital Play offers a critical analysis of interactive media. Inspired by the work of Raymond Williams, the book traces the development of video gaming from its humble origins in hacker circles to its current status as a $20 billion global cultural industry. Stephen Kline, Nick Dyer-Witheford, and Greig de Peuter systematically debunk cyber-guru optimism about globally networked digital communications by analysing the management practices of the corporations that designed and marketed video games to youthful audiences. They reveal that the ascent of this new communications industry has been anything but smooth and inevitable. From Atari to Microsoft, Space Invaders to The Sims, the authors uncover the successive crises that forced game makers, faced with constant instabilities in the global entertainment sector, to become increasingly innovative.
